Teenage Drinking Essay

Teenage Drinking Essay Free Online Research Papers Although there has been a decrease in the percent of high school seniors that have used alcohol but still eighty percent of high school seniors have used alcohol. (The setting of adolescent alcohol and drug use. 1) Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) says â€Å"During a typical weekend, an average of one teenager each hour is in a car crash. Just about fifty percent of those crashes involve alcohol (1). A study was conducted with 449 juniors and seniors attending two Midwestern high schools between the ages of sixteen to nineteen. The study came across at all the different settings where adolescents use alcohol and drugs. They also looked at the emphasis gender and peer groups had on the place where consumption of alcohol and drugs occurs and settings where it is most likely to take place (Teenage Drinking in America. 1). Does the setting affect the use of alcohol and drugs by adolescents? Is that setting determined by what kind of an individual you are (i.e. jock, outcast, preps, and geeks)? Alcohol consumption differs universally between male and female but also across different age groups and of social status (Teenage Drinking in America. 2). 81% of boys and 83% of girls admitted to ever using alcohol in their lifetime. On the other hand 46% of boys and 41% of girls admitted to ever using marijuana in their lifetime (6). Social crowd association has been extremely foretelling of drug and alcohol use in adolescence (3). As anticipated the group that they called the â€Å"toughies† was related to a greater substance use than any other group (6). Brown says crowds are â€Å"reputation based collectives of similarly stereotyped individuals who may or may not spend time together (3).† Females were found to most likely report using alcohol at family parties and to a certain extent in their homes than male alcohol users (9). Drinking while driving, before school events, and on streets were more common than at home with parents and or guardians (3). According to MADD, the vast majority of young people (79%) say that being drunk is appealing because it feels good. Amongst the many other reasons given are relaxation and escape. Some teenagers use alcohol as an outlet for all the stress and problems in their life (The setting of adolescent alcohol and drug use. 1). Even though the numbers might be decreasing, the problem still remains. The misconception that alcohol is not a risky drug is only going to continue to increase the numbers of teenagers using alcohol (2). The social morays have changed to be acceptant of teenage drinking. Possibly this is one of the main reasons why alcohol use often turns into alcohol abuse at such an early age (1). Public Opinion & Responding to Crisis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Public Opinion & Responding to Crisis - Essay Example The suicide at McKinley middle school is a report on the saddening death of a school teenager who took his own life away. Kenny McKinley who was laid to rest on September, 28th 2010, made the fatal attempt on his life while in school. A point to note is that suicidal signs or symptoms had been noted in him but as usual, they were not taken seriously. This occurrence brings about the big question about how seriously persons’ should view a crisis and take combative measures to make sure that it does not lead to a negative occurrence. It is obvious that if at all the people around Kenny were swift enough in taking measures to deal with the suicidal symptoms in him, the chances of him taking away his own life would have been reduced. This is because a positive step had already been made toward averting the situation, the crisis had been identified (Kowalski, 2010). All they had to do is seek ways of mitigating the risks associated with the crisis at hand. The same situation is als o exemplified in the case where Teddy Molina, a student from Flour Bluff High School, took away his life with a hunting rifle after what reports describe as a hounding experience from bullies on him. The two cases are similar in that people around Molina were aware of his experiences and how much they were affecting him but it is sad to note that no action was taken to avert the crisis. Communication is the conveyance or imparting of information, knowledge, ideas, feelings or news from one party to another. Therefore, it is a very important tool that can be used to make or break a situation. From the point of view of a crisis, communication can effectively be used to avert the possible occurrence of an unfavorable event. It is important to note, however, that, communication should be made in a good manner for it to bring out positive results because improper communication can even make situations worse. I believe that if at all proper communication would have been done to address Ke nny’s suicidal symptoms, there are chances that the problems that led to his decision of taking away his own life would have been solved in a way. During that time, the people who were close to him should have reported this to someone who could offer help to him, like the school counselor, instead of assuming these signs. A responsible person would have determined the gravity of his problem and sought ways to see sense and solve the problem with the deceased and help him overcome the suicidal feelings. A constant follow –up on him would also have helped him know that there were people on his side who were willing to help him face his troubles and would have helped him feel loved and protected. Most of such like cases are mainly caused by depression, a state in which a person feels dejected and sometimes hopeless and inadequate. It is a state at which people can do very destructive things not only to the people around them but even to themselves. A person in this condit ion is in a crisis and should be handled with utmost care to make sure that they do not come to the point of taking destructive measures to try solving their issues. A properly thought out plan to deal with crisis is important in any institution, including schools. If McKinley Middle School had employed such a plan earlier, we would not have been talking of such cases as

Adorno notes Essay Example for Free

Adorno notes Essay Theory Adorno argues that Capitalism provides society with the products of a culture industry in order to keep them passive to their positions and prevent them from questioning it. Capitalism uses culture as a way of securing the status quo by providing society with the norms and values of the dominant class. Popular culture is the reason for society being passive towards their positions and uninterested in overthrowing the capitalist system through reminding them that this is the way it hould be. Cultural industries produce unsophisticated, repetitive products rather than something which may lead society to question life. They produce programmes with hidden messages which are absorbed by the viewer, enforcing the norms and values of the capitalists. False needs are created by the capitalist system in order to keep society in a placid state, wanting something that they have been told they should want but that they do not need. This is created and satisfied by the capitalist ystem while also working in their interest. In television, the difference between high and low culture barely exists as it is so easily accessed by everyone and so class distinctions fade unlike the opera where it is only accessible to a few and so is still seen as high culture. Adorno uses the example of an underpaid schoolteacher who is living in poverty but is clever and so the underlying message is that she will be okay because she is intelligent. He argues how dangerous the use of stereotypes are ithin television, he uses the example of a young, pretty girl who the viewer should instantly like because she is pretty, a pretty girl can do no wrong and so even when she does do wrong, she gets off very lightly with it. Euphoria: Glengarry Glen Ross :: essays research papers fc

Euphoria   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Glengarry Glen Ross is a movie based on the award winning play by David Mamet dealing with the corrupt world of real estate salesmen in hot pursuit of closing their next big deal in hopes of obtaining the American Dream. The desire for the next big lead or prospect as it is called in the real estate world causes the salesman to act out in a foolish and oftentimes violent manner. The behavior the salesmen demonstrate when a lead is unavailable can be compared to a crack head experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Both will deviate from what is socially acceptable behavior and become violent with actions or words, harm others or their property and cause them and others stress related illnesses.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Salesmen are put under tremendous amounts of stress by their bosses on a daily basis. The 3M meetings or â€Å"morning motivational meetings,† are designed to keep the salespeople alert, on their toes and ready to control the mind of any hot leads they might obtain that day. An example of this in the movie is when Dave Moss states, ‘â€Å"I’ve got 48 hours to make a lot of money,’† (Glengarry Glen Ross). You can almost feel the tension oozing from the desperate man’s voice as he speaks these words. This type of ultimatum will in effect cause the person to become anxious and panicked as they attempt to meet the deadline their boss has placed on them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Psychological mind control is a way the bosses motivate their salespeople and this mind control has a trickle down effect. The salespeople then use the mind control technique they learn from their bosses on their clients as well. In the movie, Shelley Levine aka â€Å"The Machine,† illustrates the technique on a prospect: ‘â€Å"You gotta’ believe in yourself†¦If you see the opportunity then take it†¦ this is the now and this is that dream†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ (Glengarry Glen Ross). Shelley Levine then proceeds to tell his client â€Å"‘Now I want you to sign†¦I sat for five minutes then I sat for twenty two minutes watching the clock on the wall†¦ I locked in on them and they finally signed’† (Glengarry Glen Ross). This hypnotic effect of mind control is hard to master; however, once the defense barriers are broken one can close many deals.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  After many disappointing cold calls, meetings and drop bys one of the salesmen, Dave Moss, has an idea that he feels is sure to be the solution to all their troubles with the bad leads.

Fourth Amendment Exceptions Summary Essay

The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution requires that no search or seizure shall be carried out unless a warrant has been issued. The exceptions are: searches with consent, frisks, plain feel/plain view, incident to arrest, automobile exceptions, exigent circumstances and open fields, abandoned property and public place exceptions (Harr, Hess, 2006, p. 219). Consent to search any property must be given by t actual owners or, as set forth in the United States v Matlock (1974) by a person in charge of that property. If, for instance more than one person owns a property, only one of those individuals must give consent. There are exceptions to that rule as well. Only commonly shared areas of that property may be searched (Harr,Hess, 2006). Take for instance a family living in an apartment which comprises of a husband, wife and sister to the man. The sister would give consent for common areas, such as the living room, den, kitchen, and bathroom, to be searched and she canno t give consent to allowing the bedroom of the brother and sister in-law to be searched. The husband, on the other hand, could consent to having the bedroom searched because it is there joint bedroom and is not off-limits to him. Other conditions on the searches incident to arrest exception include the use of force, the search of other individuals with the arrested individual, searching the vehicle of an arrest person, contemporaneousness and inventory searches â€Å"if a government agent has probable cause to believe the vehicle contains contraband or evidence of a crime without a warrant† because â€Å"in the time it would take to get a warrant, the car, driver and contraband or evidence could be long gone† (Harr, Hess, 2006. p. 231). The 1981 case of Robbins v. California saw the justifications for searching without a warrant. Those specifications include that the mobility of vehicles produce exigent circumstances.

Essay about José Martí - 568 Words

Josà © Martà : A Cuban Hero The nineteenth century introduced several great leaders into this world, many recognized by historians today. These men, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and others, have all been honored and commemorated for their contributions. One such leader, Josà © Martà , continues to remain anonymous outside the Hispanic community, and hidden in the shadows cast by these men. His name does not appear in the history books or on the tongues of many proud Americans, for he was neither a citizen of America nor an American hero. He brought together Cuban people from all over the nation in the hope of establishing independence and finding freedom for the people of Cuba. He educated many people of his party for over ten years. He alone toiled away to keep their interests focused during the long wait towards independence. He accumulated money weekly from the many Cuban members and persuaded people to join together harmoniously under the influence of the Cuban party. Planning each aspect of the Revolution, he compiled shipments of arms without the knowledge of neither the United States nor Cuban governments. He placed his heart and soul into the organization and preparations of the Revolution without complaint.
